In rural China many people have never even heard of the profession of social work. So building trust, especially in remote and less developed communities, can be tough.

Poverty underscores many of the day-to-day problems that Zhengchuan deals with. Like all Barefoot Social Workers in the programme, which the Government has utilised to fill the void where its social welfare system has difficulty reaching, Zhengchuan helps link vulnerable children and their families with social welfare and protection services including financial aid and health care.

In the aftermath of the Wenchuan earthquake, UNICEF and the National Working Committee on Children and Women set up 40 Child Friendly Spaces in severely affected areas of Sichuan. Now recognized as a powerful tool for the long term psycho-social recovery of children, the Child Friendly Space project has helped over 300,000 children and parents to recover from the disaster.

Enveloped by mountains and valleys, Hongbai town of Shifang City, was among the most severely damaged in the Wenchuan Earthquake in southwest China in 2008. Out of the 6,800 inhabitants in 1,244 households, nearly 1,000 died, including 159 children under the age of 18.
