Figure 3.1 Under-five mortality rate, 1991–2013

09/01/2015

China’s national Under-Five Mortality Rate (U5MR) 42 declined, from 61 per thousand live births in 1991 to 12 per thousand live births in 2013, with an average annual reduction of 7 per cent.  During this period, the under-five mortality rate dropped by 71 per cent in urban areas and 80 per cent in rural areas. In 1991, the under-five mortality rate was 2.4 times higher in rural than in urban areas. By 2013, this risk ratio had decreased to 1.4 times higher in rural areas. However, this does not take into account the undocumented numbers of rural migrant children who die in urban areas.
