Results from 2008 NHSS show nationally in 2008 the rate was 41 per cent for early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour of birth, 28 per cent for exclusive breastfeeding, 43 per cent for timely complementary feeding and 37 per cent for continued breastfeeding. This chart shows sub-optimal infant and young child feeding from the birth to fifteen month old in general, and large urban and rural difference in breastfeeding.
* UNICEF and WHO recommend early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary feeding until at least two years of age. (WHO, Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding, WHO, 2003)
