A nationwide survey conducted in 2000 among children below the age of five years found Vitamin A deficiency prevalence (serum concentrations of retinol less than 20 μg/dL) to be 12 per cent nationally, 5 per cent in urban areas and 15 per cent in rural areas. A 2006 survey found slightly decreased prevalence levels: 9 per cent nationally, 4 per cent in urban areas and 12 per cent in rural areas.
