Beijing, 19 November 2012 - On World Toilet Day, UNICEF says that trends in the past five years allow for cautious optimism that significant progress will be made in decreasing the number of people globally without safe sanitation.

BEIJING, 5 November 2012 – China has been declared free of one of the world’s major causes of preventable death of mothers and newborns. Following a maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) elimination validation exercise carried out last month, theWorld Health Organization(WHO) formally declared that China has eliminated MNT on 30 October 2012.

BEIJING, 18 October2012– In the aftermath of the September 2012 earthquake that struck Yiliang County, Yunnan Province, UNICEF has sent four shipments of supplies and, with the National Working Committee on Children and Women(NWCCW)and the Yunnan Working Committee on Children and Women, established three Child Friendly Spaces to support the long-term recovery and wellbeing of earthquake-affected children.
