A primary mission of global education reforms is to strengthen children's social emotional competencies, equipping them with core skills needed for the 21st century. A key part of China's reforms to basic education is in improving education quality to meet children's social and emotional needs, which help with children's all-round physical and mental development.
To explore an effective model for implementing social and emotional education in Chinese schools and classrooms, in 2011, the Ministry of Education and UNICEF co-initiated the Social Emotional Learning, or SEL, project.
The project is currently being piloted across 250 rural schools in five counties in five provinces of Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou, Xinjiang and Yunnan. Since inception, the SEL project has developed and evolved through international and national expert meetings, national, provincial and county-level trainings, research, field surveys and creating SEL training materials.
