WASH in Schools project in Zhong County, Chongqing

This short video introduces and shows the positive impact of the UNICEF WASH-led whole school environment improvement (WASH in Schools) project in Zhong County, Chongqing. The project has opened a new window for education development efforts and aims at developing child-friendly schools in China, for total quality improvement and management innovation.

Since project launch in 2013, there have been improved sanitation and school conditions, with Zhong County investing more than 5 million RMB to build or rebuild 45 school toilets and with UNICEF investing over 1.5 million RMB to renovate toilets and hand-washing facilities in 13 primary schools and 1 kindergarten including in Baimiao, Xingfeng, Tujing, Shanguang. The county authority has also raised over 2.8 million RMB to install and replace water supply facilities, helping about 30,000 people to get access to healthy drinking water.

The Chongqing municipal education department has bought in the project experiences in Zhong County. In April of 2016, a provincial replication and scale up initiative on WASH in Schools has started and will benefit all the 40 counties in Chongqing in next few years.
