Social Emotional Learning in Xinjiang

13/10/2016

This video introduced Xin Jiang Province, Shule County's experience in implementing the SEL project started by Ministry of Education (MOE) China and UNICEF China in a bilingual Uyghur and Chinese language context. The SEL project has learned from international experience and combined it with the realities in China,  aiming to create a safe, happy, inclusive and participatory living and learning environment for children, and support them to establish positive self-awareness, to gain the knowledge and skills needed to communicate with others, face challenges, seek support and solve problems. Through training and undertaking SEL school based curriculum, we hope the project can be extended to more schools and benefit more students and teachers.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

It's general accepted that Social and emotional learning "is the process through which children and young people …acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills to recognise and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, demonstrate care and concern for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and handle interpersonal situations effectively" (Durlak & Weissberg, 2012).
