"Children have a unique nature and value to society," reflects Dr. Chen Xuefeng, UNICEF China's Early Childhood Development Specialist. "It is vital for all parents and teachers to listen carefully to their voices and respect their views."
As one of China's leading authorities on early childhood development, Chen Xuefeng's experience and technical knowledge are in high demand. Xuefeng has been helping to lead UNICEF's efforts to help China develop a national plan to provide early childhood development services in all areas of China.
In late 2010, her dreams came true when China's State Council announced its push to make early childhood development universal for all children under 6 by 2020, with an allocation of 5 billion yuan over 5 years.
"UNICEF was a leading international organization that played an active role in helping to develop policies and programmes to make universal ECD possible," says Xuefeng with great animation. She doesn't say too much about her personal vision and leadership, both of which helped make this possible.
"As a child development professional I join hands with the best quality colleagues and experts in UNICEF," she reflects. "On this team I contribute my best value to improve the welfare of children, especially to better the lives of children in the early years. This positively impacts on their well-being later on in life."
These days Chen Xuefeng is often called upon to give public talks, speak with the media, and to record interviews on China's efforts to provide the best start in life for children aged 0-6. As a gifted singer she can also be heard at parties and gatherings, entertaining guests with her clear soprano voice.
Whether speaking or singing her vibrant enthusiasm for early childhood inspires everyone with whom she comes in contact.
Asked what motivated her to work for UNICEF she pauses for a moment then says, "UNICEF's mission is to promote the realization of children's rights. I believe this is one of the most important ways to advance civilization and the well-being of humanity."
